A road trip with three stops, a walking tour, the way to the trailhead past the gas station. You planned it once. Nobody else should have to.
Key takeaways
- A directions link from one map app only opens in that app. Send a Google Maps route to an iPhone friend and they get a web page, not their route.
- JamShare keeps the start, the stops, the destination and the travel mode, and rebuilds the same route for Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps and 2GIS.
- Each app then plans the actual roads itself, with its own live traffic, so everyone gets turn-by-turn navigation in the app they know.
Which route links work
| Shared from | Link types | Opens in |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Directions links and maps.app.goo.gl route links, multi-stop routes | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps, 2GIS |
| Google My Maps | Public maps: the pins become stops, the map's title becomes the route name | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps, 2GIS |
| Apple Maps | Directions links shared from iPhone, iPad and Mac, including stops | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps, 2GIS |
| Yandex Maps | Route links from any Yandex domain | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps, 2GIS |
| 2GIS | Directions links from 2GIS | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps, 2GIS |
2GIS is offered where 2GIS has maps, such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Central Asia and the UAE.
Plan it once, share it once. Everyone drives, walks or rides the same way.
Driving, walking, transit and cycling
The travel mode travels with the route: driving, walking, public transit or cycling. Each app opens the route in that mode. 2GIS has no cycling directions, so a cycling route opens on foot there.
If the route starts at “My location”, it stays that way: each person starts from wherever they are, which is usually what you want for a meetup.
Why not Waze?
Waze links can only carry one destination, so a route with stops would arrive in Waze as a single pin and lose everything in between. Rather than quietly drop your stops, JamShare doesn't offer Waze for routes. To send a destination to a Waze driver, share the place itself, and Waze plans the drive with live traffic; see Google Maps to Waze.
Good to know
- Each app plans its own roads between your stops, so the exact path can differ slightly from app to app. The stops and their order stay the same.
- Google Maps links carry up to nine stops between the start and the destination, so very long routes may need splitting.
- Private Google My Maps can't be read. Set the map to public, or share a directions link instead.
